Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro

Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro was born in 1979, in Lisbon. He is a Portuguese photojournalist based in Macau for over 12 years. His closest family has no artistic tradition. It is thus justified that he only truly entered the world of photography at the age of 18. He meets many Portuguese photographers from the most diverse areas and continues to learn from them. After four years studying Geological Engineering, he concluded that his interests lay elsewhere and enrolled in a degree in Communication Sciences, Journalism variant, at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa – a degree he completed in 2005. 

He started working in the field of photography in 2000 and, two years later, he began his professional internship at the extinct Intermeios news agency. For six years he was part of the permanent staff of the newspaper “A Bola”. After that, he collaborated with several Portuguese and foreign publications, including I, Público, Correio da Manhã, O Comércio do Porto, Expresso, Washington Post, BBC, The Guardian, among many others. He also carried out photographic works for several companies. Between 2004 and 2010 he was, in Portugal, the official photographer of the Brazilian singer Daniela Mercury. 

Winner of several awards throughout his career, Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro also held several exhibitions, in his own name and collectively. Published in 2015, “Macau 5.0 |澳門 5.0 | Macao 5.0” is his first photography book. In 2019, he presented “Myanmar: the portrait of a people”. In 2021, he presents two books: “Desvelo • 關愛 • Zeal”, published in Macau, and “Tonle Sap”, released in Brazil. Having arrived in Macau, he joined the newspaper Hoje Macau, where he worked as an editor, photojournalist and editor between 2010 and 2014. He was director of photography for Culture Guide magazine and was photography coordinator for Macau magazine, Portuguese version, between 2011 and 2021. Also, between 2018 and 2021, multimedia journalist and editor of the Plataforma Media project of the Global Media group. Currently, he is part of the editorial staff of the newspaper Ponto Final as a photojournalist and also collaborates with the Portuguese news agency LUSA. In 2022, he finished his Master in Documentary Photography at LABASAD – Barcelona School of Arts & Design. He is a founding member of Halftone – Macao Photographic Association.
